The telecommunication industry is rapidly deregulated
across the Asia Pacific Region; more carriers are taking advantage of
the market place and start up their operations. In Hong Kong, there
are over 200 ETS licenses granted for carrier operation since 1999.
As the competition increases, the margin of profit is also eroding;
operation cost has been scrutinized and tightened up for cost control.
Hong Kong deregulation has been ahead in comparison of the surrounding
countries. There are a number of fiber optic networks planned to be
operational in Hong Kong to service the bandwidth requirement across
the region; this has driven down the cost for IPL substantially while
the local loop access remains high.
